How Long Does Addiction Treatment Take?

Table of Contents

Addiction is no standard disease and neither is recovery. A very basic question that most people would ask when deciding to go to rehab is, “How long will the treatment take?” Depending on various factors such as the type of substance use, the level of addiction, and mental health disorders that may be present along with an individual level of commitment to recovery, the answer may differ.

Healing is a long process, and we at Palm Coast Treatment Solutions can evaluate and provide you with the best help. This blog differentiates the common schedules of addiction treatment programs and provides some insights on what you should expect during your recovery.

Factors that Affect Treatment Duration

There are some variables one should be aware of before jumping into timelines, such as, how long treatment can take:

Nature and Scope of the Addiction: An individual with a chronic opioid dependency disorder would take a more extended duration than that of an individual who has a short-term alcohol dependency.

Mental Health Conditions: Dual diagnosis cases (where the problems of mental illness and addiction are collateral) are usually in need of more detailed and more prolonged care.

Physical Health Condition: The overall health of an individual may influence the rates at which he/she respond to treatment and detox.

Support Systems: Families that are supportive or have access to sober living-type settings usually manage the process of care more seamlessly.

Care level: Before care and treatment, the level of care in which an individual will receive makes a difference; thus, one can be admitted to detox, residential, or outpatient care and the overall time spent in recovery may increase based on the level of care.

Detox: 3 to 10 Days

The initial stage in the recovery of addiction is medical detox. It includes the removal of substances in the body in a safe way under medical care. Depending on the type of substance taken and the withdrawal symptoms, the detox can last any time.

Detox with alcohol: 37 days

Detoxification of opioids: 5–10 days

Detoxification with benzodiazepines: 7 to 14 days (usually a tapering regimen)

Detox only deals with the physical part of the addiction but it does not deal with the psychological part. This is where long-term rehab programs come into play.

Inpatient/Residential Treatment: 30 to 90 Days

Inpatient rehab has both 24-hour assistance and a more structured environment. Characteristics of programs tend to be:

  • Short Term: 30 days
  • Proposition Standard: 60 days
  • Long term, More than 90 days

Treatment that occurs in residential settings aims at addressing the causes of the addiction in a form of therapy, group work and medical treatment and behavioral counseling. A lot of scholars concur with the argument that 90 days or more of remedial yields the best results in terms of sustained sobriety. This has been backed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) which proposes that longer periods under treatment usually lead to improved recovery.

Outpatient Treatment: 12 Weeks to 6 Months

Outpatient care is suitable among those who have been under residential treatment or who experience fewer symptoms of addiction. The programs enable individuals to reside at home and receive therapy a couple of times every week.

  • Outpatient Procedures: Common outpatient procedures include
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): 57 days/week, 68 hours/day
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP): 3-5 days a week, 3-4 hours per day
  • Common outpatient treatment: 1-2 times a week

The outpatient program typically takes 3 to 6 months, although others can extend their program to long-term recovery.

Aftercare: Ongoing Support

The recovery is a lifetime process even after one has undergone formal treatment. The patient can be supported by aftercare in order to prevent relapse. This step will involve:

  • Sober living houses
  • Support groups (AA or NA)
  • Therapy nurse specialist personal (group)
  • Alumni programs
  • Case management

Aftercare does not have a definite time frame in the sense that individuals remain involved in support services for months and even years to be able to sustain sobriety.

Why Longer Treatment is Often Better

Although it might be interesting to expect a 30-day rehab, longer treatment courses have better results in avoiding relapse and ensuring a stable recovery period. With a longer stay, you are afforded the extra time to:

  • Learn how to cope
  • Counter-emotive and behavioral triggers
  • Heal relationships
  • Establish a good support system

The process of healing is long, not a race. The longer you take to practice healthy behaviors and create a healthy platform, the higher the chances of remaining sober.
